Among Giants - A story of my first photos and the importance of taking care of nature

This photo was taken on the first day of my families trip to Glacier National Park, a trip that was my first major experience taking photos.

A photo of a family with color taken out and made black and white in the image walking on a paved walking trail cutting through towering green pine trees approaching a mountain covered in trees

Some of the best memories I have with my family involve our yearly camping trips we would take around the country. We went to many different places like Acadia National Park one year or Yellowstone and the Tetons another year.

It had been a long time since we took one of our yearly trips but my brother was living in Montana at the time, and my cousin was getting married in Utah, so everything kind of came together for us to be able to take a trip out west. Having just bought my first camera a couple months before I was excited to be able to take photos in such a gorgeous place.

We got to Glacier National Park in the early afternoon and got settled in our cabin and decided to go to the visitor center and just kind of orient ourselves with the park and figure out a plan. We got some maps and decided to take a short loop hike around a path by the visitor center.

I fell behind my family as they kept walking when I stopped to take a photo of something that I can no longer recall. I turned to catch up but noticed the opportunity to take a photo of all of them and sort of capture a moment. I love this photo because it was such a fun trip and I got a photo with my family all in it. When I went to edit it I decided that I felt like showing how small we are compared to nature was a good narrative to show, and decided to make my family members be black and white and fade them into the photo a bit more than if the colors had been allowed to show.

To me this photo has kind of always the importance of taking care of nature. Without nature and this Earth we truly are nothing and if we don't start taking care of it we will lose so much. We need people in power that will acknowledge and act on the emergency that is coming as well as corporations to make changes that will reduce their impact on climate change.
